The famous beach of Spain is in Barcelona

Who says this is a beach; it is paradise, exclaim the tourists! This is the beach in Barcelona, Spain. The second most populated city of Spain and a part of Catalonia Province, Barcelona is in the forefront of tourism. It is also an industrially advanced town with many major industries located here. Tourists flock to Barcelona because the city is immaculately beautiful; beautiful nature, buildings in testimony of superior architecture, an unbelievably beautiful beach, many museums and industries. All of these keep visitors busy.

The beach is within walking distance from La Ramba. It is also very well connected by road and by metro rail. If the tourist prefers, he can stay in the villas located very near the beach. There are many hotels and bars where you can enjoy the delicious food and also the beautiful surrounding nature. Although the beach attracts a large number of tourists, it is very clean, as can be seen in the crystal clear water. In fact, some tourists say that a visit to Barcelona is incomplete without a visit to the beach.

Water sports are yet another attraction on the Barcelona beach. There is a variety of sports designed to suit people of all ages. The beach is also safe for swimming. There are many vendors who keep moving on the beach selling cold beer, snacks, coconuts, etc. The tourist can also enjoy beach sports like basket ball, volley ball etc. There are places where you can relax in the shade. As the tourist walks to the beach, he will come across some of the monumental buildings and many great works of sculpture. Amazing Huelva Highlights

For natural and awesome landscapes with great sandy beaches and for some authentic Spanish style, look no further than Huelva. It is the charming and tranquil Andalusia province that offers refreshing vacations in the summer months.

Location

Huelva province is situated in the south of Spain west of Andalusia, between Portugal and Cadiz, Seville and Badajoz provinces. Huelva comprises seventy-nine municipalities that together include a total of 600,000 people.

Huelva has plenty of great beaches and sunshine to offer; it has a wide diversity of intriguing landscapes, such as the Doñana nature reserve, historic architectural monuments and picturesque natural landscapes of the mountains and the sea. For example, the National Park is one of Europe’s most significant wetland reserves for over 365 species of birds that have been recorded, whether they have resident or migratory status; some are considered to be endangered species. The reserve also functions as a park for guided trips, trekking or horse riding, with museums housing informative facts about the residents and place.

Highlights of Huelva

Near the National Park is the infamous village of El Rocio where Rocieros flock by the thousands every year to pay homage to their saint, the Virgen del Rocio, at the most festive event in Andalucia, the Romeria del Rocio. The festival has evolved between the local pagan and Catholic beliefs, which has created a great hive of festivity during its celebration, presenting a truly spectacular sight with hundreds of pilgrims flocking to this part of the world in eager anticipation to participate.

Huelva was made famous by Christopher Columbus who arrived at the old Palos de la Frontera port before he went on to discover America. Palos now proudly displays replicas of the famous explorer’s ships in the open dock.

One must not miss the spectacular and awesome Sierra de Aracena even though it is not very high for a mountain range, at 1.059 meters. Around Sierra, one will discover more gems in the Andalusia where typical Andalusian homes are found; those white washed villages with chestnut forests all around and home cooked cuisine. These are examples of the natural beauty all around Huelva.

Another unique sight at Huelva is the Rio Tinto Mines that is at Nieblas Village. The Rio Tinto River is named the Red River from the red colored water flowing through the ferrous ore mines. Both the river and the land around can be seen as a beautiful myriad of red, orange, brown, green and yellow as the water runs across the area. The Rio Tinto Mines are supposedly the world’s oldest mine that was enriched by history, and as legend has it – they were King Solomon’s mines. These mines attracted the Phoenicians, the Greeks and the Carthaginians, with the Romans coming in last but not least.

But the Romans abandoned the mines in 1556; they were only re-opened in 1724 by the Spanish.

Due to bad management and inefficiency, the mines were sold to a British consortium in the year 1871. The British saw the potential of these mines and worked at them until they turned into a profitable commercial entity to and became the world’s most significant sources of sulfur and copper.

THE HISTORICAL RICHNESS of GRANADA

There is so much history to Granada's glory, causing it to be unstable through the ages and through the reigns of many conquerors before it was established as a sovereign kingdom by Ibn Ahmar, an Arabian prince of the Nasrid tribe, in 1238. He was really a fair and able ruler, but did not have the opportunity to reign longer with the whole of Spain coming under the Christian Re-conquest.
Granada’s Rich History

Although the Moors were first at Granada, they were encumbered with battles throughout the ages until they succumbed to King Fernando III in the 13th century. With the death of Moorish leader, Ibn Ahmar, in 1275, the Moors remain as Spain’s only Muslim kingdom living till today. However, its incoming refugee numbers fueled its growth in various industries, such as culture and commerce, which are flourishing today.

Thus, the Christian and Muslim kingdoms have molded Granada’s historical glory for more than two centuries up until today. The famous Alhambra palace was the brainchild of these Muslim sultans that brought fame to this area, until the city was entangled in an internal battle fueled by two of the sultan’s favorite wives. By then the Christian Re-conquest, which had been going strong, took full reign in 1479 to set up the united Christian kingdoms of Spain between Castile and Aragón when Fernando and Isabel married one another. The rest is history, as they say, when through the royal reign, Ronda, Málaga and Almería were finally conquered, thus fulfilling the Christian Re-Conquest goal.

The Gitanos of Granada

As with many of the Andalusian cities, Granada is still home to an old and traditional gypsy population, known as the Gitanos. There is quite a large number of this tribe today in Granada; the clans from which Spain’s best flamenco dancers, guitarists and singers emerged.

These clans tend to occupy the caves which their forefathers used to inhabit, but now specifically at Sacromonte Hill, giving tourists a dose of zambras.

Gastronomical Options

It may not offer the best of Spanish cuisines due to the free tapas offered by some tapas bars, but Granada still can offer some North African flavor at its ‘Little Morocco’ where there are plenty of health foods and Moroccan tearooms with a delectable menu. This unique street can serve as the gathering point for picnics on one of the Alhambra visits.

There are restaurants that are easy on the pocketbook serving economical meals everywhere in Granada. You can check out Campo del Principe, a nice square with a restaurant that has open air terraces at the south of Alhambra Hill; it is very popular at night during summer.

SPELLBINDING GUADALEST

Guadalest is a tiny, charming village situated between the mountains in the valley also called Guadalest. It is close to Benidorm and is easily reached along the CV70.

Getting to GUADALEST

It is easy to reach Guadalest as the same road also goes to Terra Mitica. Drive along using the signs that lead to La Nucia until you reach a roundabout that will turn you off to Guadalest on the right.

It takes less than 30 minutes to reach Guadalest making this town a favorite day trip or half day excursion point recommended by many local tourist agencies.

Attractions

Guadalest may be a small and charming village in a unique setup, but it offers a most picturesque view of the mountain top that might just take your breath away. The spectacular natural wonders of the peaks draw many to Guadalest, making it the most frequented village by tourists in the whole of Spain; it was declared a historical monument of artistic value in the year 1974.

One of the best attractions here in Guadalest is the castle of Islamic origin that stands precariously on a cliff face in its original position as in days of old. Its construction was said to have been extremely costly as it was completely fortified on the cliff to ensure its stability; it still stands today.

The Guadalest Castle

Even before reaching the castle, the street leading to it is really a pretty sight to behold. It is called De La Pena; its distinctiveness comes from the houses that are white-washed with quaint and decorative flower pots at each house lining the street. There are various types of craftware sold in quaint shops along the way offering leather ware as well. This interesting street comes to a halt at the long staircase leading to a door carved in a huge rock that leads to another ancient section that charges a small entrance fee. At this end stands the Town Hall, which was once the mysterious dungeon as old as the 12th century and carved out of the huge rock. This is the oldest section of the village; this is also the highest section of the village from which one can view the local town church, the bell tower and Saint Joseph’s castle.

The Arrabal

This is the newer section of the village situated on the cliff’s other side and has about 200 inhabitants, having moved out of the old castle, which has become a main tourist attraction in Guadalest.

NIGHTLIFE! MUSIC! STAY! in GRANADA

The Granada Nightlife

There are plenty of bars around Granada that will whet your appetite for more. Bars or as commonly known in the local tongue, Bodegas, are at the street corners, in hotels and on hilltops around the region, with the oldest bar in Granada being the Sabanilla bar. Its attraction is that for every drink ordered, there is a free-of-charge tapa.

These bars light up the night life in this region, opening until midnight. However, early hour drinking can be done at the university’s student section. These bars are alive with pub and disco patrons, especially during the summer.

Other kinds of night life can be found at the splendidly restored cinema-turned-disco after the movies end while a cultural centre not only displays Arabic culture pieces, but also offers live Arabic music that livens up the place.

There are dance areas such as the Salsero Mayor, which specializes in Latin jazz, Salsa and Merengue. The streets are usually jam-packed with drinkers during the weekend evenings, whereas there is also a gay and lesbian bar that is not exclusive which offers drinks, music and dancing.

Granada music

Flamenco performances are available to tourists with the most popular shows being the Los Jardines Neptuno performed at Calle Arabial near the south end of the town. The performances are crowded in the summer; thus, it is a better option to view this in the winter when the crowd is thinner and the atmosphere is more intimate with a log fire. There are also live jazz performances in the flamenco bars that provide a great and lively atmosphere to pass the time.

Granada is not unlike many Andalusia cities that have a substantial gypsy or Gitano population, many of whom are Spain’s best music talents, such as flamenco singers, dancers and guitarists. These gypsy clans originally inhabited the Sacromonte hill cave homes while performing the zambras for tourists. These can turn out to be nasty experiences as the tourists often lose a lot of money for some dance and diluted sherry, while ladies can be leered at if you’re pulled into their cave haven. Do not take too much money with you if you want to experience this local environment.

Accommodation

The Alhambra Palace would be the most luxurious and popular place to stay in Granada with its exquisite interior inspired by that of a palace; the whole hotel is spacious and rich with ornate stonework of Moorish heritage. Its unique Islamic tiles of marble and other ceramic works set the whole hotel in awesome splendor with a fantastic view over Granada and Sierra Nevada.

Meanwhile, Hesperia Granada is not too far off in popularity as this newly renovated historic building is located right at the town center. It is at an excellent location for one to explore the surroundings of Alhambra and the old part of Granada while soaking in the magnificent Andalusia landscape.

The more luxurious ‘Hospes Palacio de los Patos’, was previously a palace that has been UNESCO-certified and is a protected heritage building in Granada. This 5-star accommodation boasts of contemporary but stylish rooms of historic value.

The Alhambra Palace has a historical complex, the ‘Parador de Granada’, which allows tourists to stroll through the garden grounds to enjoy the intimacy and serenity of the environment. There are plenty of great art pieces and exceptional furniture inside the building.

SPECIAL PLACES IN SPAIN: AVILA

About the city

Avila is situated in the beautiful region of Castilla and Leon; this ramparts city is one of the most spectacular urban sights in Spain. However, in Spain, Avila is famous for one thing: the image of Saint Teresa. The mystical Saint Teresa was born here in 1515 and the monasteries and church dedicated to her bless the streets of the city. Avila is a small city, only 50,000 inhabitants, and is situated on a crag above the Adaja river, at an altitude of over 1,130 meters. Winters are extremely rough, but any other season is absolutely wonderful for exploration on foot of the city and its surroundings.

Sightseeing in a small city

The perfectly preserved walls of Avila date back to the 11th century when, in order to defend it from the Moors, 88 cylindrical towers and nine gates were built. For a panoramic view, you can cross the two and a half kilometers that surround the walls. Supported on the walls and situated at the most eastern and the oldest corner lies the Cathedral, dating back to the 12th century. The first bricks were laid in the 12th century, but the cathedral was finished in the 15th century. Search for the grave of El Tostado, a 15th century bishop nicknamed „the fried one”, because of his olive skin. Here you can also visit the choir stalls, beautifully sculptured in the Plateresque style. The altar is built in the Renaissance style. Don’t miss the 13th century sacristy, with its octagonal vaulted ceiling. In the museum you can admire a gigantic silver shrine. The Gothic Monastery is situated right next to the museum. While in Avila, you can also visit the Basilica de San Vicente. This Romano-Gothic construction has an exquisitely sculptured western portal. In the interior you will find a sarcophagus covered with a canopy belonging to Saint Vincent and his sisters.

The symbol of the city

Saint Teresa is one of the patrons of Spain. She was a mystic, a rebel, a writer and the one who founded the Carmelite order whose members walk barefoot. Her birth place in Avila is marked by the monastery, Convento de Santa Teresa. The place she lived in for 27 years is now a museum dedicated to her life. As you can see, Avila is the perfect place for those who love the church and religion; here they find a peaceful place, one that nourishes the soul.

A REMARKABLE BEAUTY - DENIA

Dénia is a lovely town lying 7 kilometers at north of Javea; it offers spectacular scenery on the winding Montgo Mountain road.

Beautiful Beaches

Dénia has splendid beaches that are an awesome sight to behold and a historical centre comprising a majestic castle rising in the midst of town. The magnificent mountain itself, Mount Montgó, has been declared a Natural Park reserve lying barely a few meters away from the ocean with fishing boats frolicking in and out of the bay, marking the lifestyle of Dénia. The sea also provides some of the best of its catch for a sumptuous seafood cuisine; thus the town is growing in popularity as a cuisine haven. There are lots of things to do and to discover in Denia, such as a refreshing stroll up to the castle, the museum, Nature Park, old churches and ancient sections of the town.

Its moderate temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius makes this resort a very attractive tourist destination with a charming old town that offers great food in its local restaurants. Its beaches stretch many kilometers northwards; it has a population of 30,000. Dénia is driven not just by tourism, but also by the fishing industry, as it has one of the most significant harbors and a matching fishing fleet to its glory. It also provides ferry connections plying Mallorca and Ibiza, providing an advantage over the years.

Tourist Information

It is easy and stress-free to get around Dénia; a tourist center is available to give you the necessary guides to the town’s sights, such as a map and tourist information. All the places of interests are noted clearly on the town map and there is even a train that shuttles you to the town castle from this center. There are many charming restaurants near the port that serve special local rice dishes, while Fideua is more renowned for its noodle-based paella.

Sights in Dénia

One can begin a sightseeing itinerary from the town hall, locally known as the ayuntamiento, and move on to the ancient church of Iglesia de la Asuncion that displays a wonderful ancient dome. Further along you will be able to visit the ancient castle of Dénia, which overlooks the stunning Dénia Bay. This Castillo was built sometime during the 11th – 12th century and gives a breath-taking view of the city and surrounding glistening sea. Inside the castle grounds stand the Palau del Governador and the interesting Museo Etnologico that houses the town’s rich history and culture.

A DIFFERENT OFFERING FROM CONIL and TARIFA at COSTA de la LUZ

Two quaint towns situated at the Costa de la Luz, Conil and Tarifa, offer a slightly different stay with their beautiful beaches and splendid panorama.

Conil

The village of Conil de la Frontera is gaining popularity as a tourist resort with low rise buildings despite being a fishing village previously, which gives it a serene and slow-paced living atmosphere. It offers lovely sandy beaches and a vibrant nightlife with local Spanish flavor as both locals and tourists enjoy the fresh catch of seafood in restaurants near the beach front.

The main delicacy offering here is a small type of white prawn, locally known as gamba blanca, which has an excellent flavor albeit being pricier than other fares. Tuna lovers will be pleased with the fresh catch in June when this ocean delight is offered at tempting prices.

Accommodation

There is a reasonable accommodation price in the town for a 4-star quality stay known as the Hotel Husa Conil Park. It is located close to Conil's beach, offering delightful sea views as well as a splendid outdoor swimming pool with a sun terrace. It has a wholesome and enjoyable buffet breakfast offering. This hotel has pine trees all around as it overlooks the lovely Conil beach. The Andalusia sunshine makes a lovely companion at the hotel’s pool as well. Its offering of a 2,000 m² garden will allow its guests a good stroll while enjoying the sun and natural beauty all around.

Alternatively, there is the Hotel cum Apartment, Loto Conil, which is situated in the town, but still close to the beach, at a kilometer’s walk away. It boasts an outdoor pool and an offering of free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV, as well as air conditioning.

Tarifa

Tarifa is known as Europe’s wind capital for its famous constant supply of wind. Many wind farms have been set up to take advantage of the natural offering in addition to the wide selection of wind sports and activities that one can enjoy.

The bay is constantly filled with the colorful sight of wind surfing or kite flying on the coastline. Located at the most southern point of Spain, this town is at the place where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. It is also very close to Gibraltar and Africa allowing it to offer fishing trips and boat rides around these regions. Whale sighting is also very common near the shoreline along the straits of Gibraltar since they look for food in that region.

The Hotel La Torre was a unique country house that has been converted into a classic hotel, as beautiful as the surrounding panorama. Its view of the lovely park of Los Alcornocales makes your stay there close to nature with its offering of spacious and comfortable rooms.

You can also enjoy sunbathing behind it and without the strong winds.

A more typical Andalusia stay would be the Posada Vagamunods, situated in the town itself. This hotel was an 18th century old building; site is worth exploring along with the historical town of Tarifa, which offers an old quarter for your slow-paced discovery.

VIC- THE HIDDEN BEAUTY

Spain is the European country that is greatly appreciated by tourists. It has proven to be one of the most beautiful holiday destinations due to its beauty and the diversity of places to visit and things to do. The landscapes are breathtaking, the cities are real architectural jewels, the traditions and the customs are full of passion and the locals fight to keep them alive. Spain is the perfect place for a holiday whether you go there with your lover, your family, your friends or simply by yourself.

Vic- a beauty

Vic is one of the hidden beauties in Spain. The city is not difficult to reach, but at first view, the image is that of a dull, grey industrial city, an unattractive one. Although other Catalan cities seem more attractive, don’t be disappointed. The problem is that the jewels of Vic have never been  brought to light, but the locals are already working on it: they are trying to renovate the entire old part of the city. Vic has a long mercantile tradition (in the leather and sausage industry). The market has been held twice a week for centuries in the Plaza Mayor and it is a wonderful place to visit. Tourists are always impressed by its beauty: the locals know how to arrange everything so that it attracts your attention. In addition, it is a great opportunity to buy fresh, ecological products. The Plaza Mayor square is bordered by coffee shops and represents an extension of the historical district of the city. The modernista style is characteristic for the city; the most representative building for this style is Casa Comella. This is a Neo-Gothic fantasy that dominates the south western corner of the square. Take a walk on the narrow streets and you will find the 2nd century Roman Temple, now a restaurant, situated right next to the ruins of the Palau dels Montcada. Other sightseeing places in Vic are the Cathedral, an elegant combination of Roman and Neo-classic styles. The cathedral has an unusual Gothic garden, a very special altar and crypt. Tourists love these places in Vic, and this is why the city is gaining more and more visitors every year. The Museu Episcopal de Vic hosts one of the most representative collections of Catalan medieval art in Spain. The landscapes are also very beautiful and many tourists like to visit the surroundings of the city. You can be one of them if you decide to visit these special corners of Spain.

THE DAURADA COAST AND THE EBRO DELTA

The Daurada Coast

The Daurada Coast is not the most beautiful coast in Spain, but it definitely has some of the most delicate and golden sand in the country making it a very attractive destination for tourists from all over the world. The cosmopolitan Sitges is known as the seaside resort for the gay community, Port Aventura is the perfect destination for families with children and the Ebre river delta is the second largest delta in the Mediterranean.

Sitges

Sitges is just half an hour’s drive from the Barcelona airport; tourists from all over the world love the city because of its nudist beaches and invade its coffee shops and bars. Its reputation increased in the 1960s when an artistic movement was flourishing, a movement opposing Franco. The past of Sitges was tumultuous. A scandalous carnival is still held every February, continuing the violent tradition of the city. The most edifying window on the history  of the city is the Museu del Cau Ferrat, once the house of the eccentric paintor Santiago Rusinyol, where tourists can admire paintings and artwork made of wrought iron.

Places to visit on the coast

Just eight kilometers away from Tarragona is Port Aventura, the most thematic park in Spain. Rich in moments full of adrenaline and places where tourists can have fun, the park is perfectly adapted to the climate and is ideal for someone who has kids. The list of family resorts continues in the south, where the Delta de l’Ebre, formed on a swamp, is full of small places having their unique characteristics. The swamp is partially situated in the Parque Nacional de Donana, a natural reserve great for walks, the perfect place where you can breathe fresh air and enjoy the beauty of nature. For those who love nature, the list of sightseeing places continues with the Eco Museu, the museum dedicated to the flora and fauna in the region.

Accommodation

Of course the region is full of hotels. However, they are very stiff; if you want to feel the spirit of the region, if you want to feel that you are in Spain, choose a villa. Villas have private owners and some of them even offer cooking services, so besides the fact that you will be able to relax in a comfortable, private and picturesque place, you will also have the opportunity to taste the delicious Spanish cuisine.

PONTEVEDRA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

The northwest of Spain

When you go to the northwest of Spain, one image will remain in your mind, and that is a clam shell. You’ll find them everywhere while in this region: on the plates, on the signs that show the direction towards the most important pilgrimage place in Spain and those that show the direction towards Santiago de Compostela. This is also the region where you can visit Pontevedra and its beautiful surroundings.

About Pontevedra

Pontevedra is one of the most seductive cities in Galicia. According to legend, Pontevedra was founded by the Greek warrior Teucro, who fought in Troy. Historians say that the city developed thanks to the sardine fishing until the middle of the 16th century when the port was completely covered by sand. As a result of its former prosperity, Pontevedra has numerous old buildings, very refined, built in granite, especially in the old part of the city. Nowadays, this part of the city is pedestrian. Squares like Praza de Teucro and Praza de Verdura are still full of traditional products that tourists can buy at good prices. Prazza de Herreria is another place where tourists can go sightseeing. The square has a lot of gardens supervised by the monastery and by the Church of San Francisco, dating back to the 14th century. Opposite may be found the unusual Neo-Classic church Virgen la Peregrina, built in an elliptical form in order to host the statue of the city’s patron. To the west, in the old fishing district, the
Plateresque church Santa la Mayor is located. The powerful guild of fishermen built it in the 16th century. Some biblical scenes on the western facadeimpress tourists by their purity and beauty. The remarkable museum Museo de Pontevedra is located in five distinct places; three of them are oriented towards the Praza da Lena. The 17th century mansion that used to belong to Castro Monteagudo exposes splendid Celtic jewellery dating back to 700 before Christ, as well as a collection of Spanish, Italian and Flemish Renaissance paintings. The museum continues in a beautiful house next door, now completely restored, that used to belong to Garcia Florez.

A beautiful holiday

Choosing Pontevedra as a holiday destination is a wonderful idea for anyone because it is sure that there are a lot of sightseeing places and many relaxing things to do, so take advantage of it!!!

PLACES TO VISIT IN EUSKADI AND NAVARRA

About the region

Euskadi and Navarra are two regions situated in the northeast of Spain that have been united for centuries by the same language: Euskera. The 7,200 kilometers of coast belonging to Euskadi have been divided into three historical territories: Viszcaya, Guipuzcoa and the interior region of Alava. Alava is situated at the border with Navarra, which is spread over 10,400 square kilometers and which offers the eye diverse landscapes, starting with the peaks of the Pyrénees and ending with the green valleys of the southern plains.

Places to see, things to do

When you decide to spend your vacation in this region, there are a few things that you shouldn’t miss, for example, the Olite Castle. The Castle is a massive construction with catellated towers and parapets. It was built in 1407 and used to have many Moorish elements, such as the hanging gardens, ajulejos (tiles) and stucco, but many of them have disappeared during the frequent restorations that the castle has undergone through the decades. Part of the castle is now a Parador. In its vicinity, tourists can visit the Santa Maria la Real Church, dating back to the 14th century. The church has a Renaissance altar and the entrance door is sculptured. From Olite, a 30 kilometers’ long road will take you to Monasterio de la Oliva, one of the first monasteries built by the French Cistercian monks.

Orreaga

Orreaga is a natural mountain pass situated in the Pyrénees that has a special place in the poetic art and history: it is here that the Navarre Basques unleashed terror upon the army of Carol the Great in 778. Across the centuries, thousands of pilgrims have passed through this place on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

Tudela

Tudela is the second biggest city in Navarra, situated in the centre of the fertile agricultural region. It is also the place where the ingredients for the Tudela vegetable soup come from, as well as the robust, red, la Ribera wine. Tudela is worth visiting for its old Moorish district, Moreria, a mysterious maze of narrow streets, bordered by houses built in the Moorish style. Here you’ll find the 12th century Cathedral, built on the exact place where a mosque used to be. Portada del Juicio, the sculptured entrance door, which presents the Doomsday, should also be on your sightseeing list.

As you can see, Navarra and Euskadi have many beautiful places to offer, so it would be a pity to miss them. Enjoy!

Menorca: The Windy Island of Spain

Menorca Island is among the islands making up the Balearic group of islands on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. It is common belief here that the coastal winds of the island play a major role in changing or modifying peoples’ personalities. If you believe in this legend, you could easily leave the island feeling quite different. It is no wonder that many tourists return here every chance that they get; some with the urge to prove whether or not the legend is true.

Menorca was referred to as the ‘minor island’ by the Romans. This factor has given it a virgin interior compared to other islands such as Mallorca. The island has lonely beaches and bays which are good for people who are seeking personal space and true relaxation.

Attractions of Menorca

Regardless of the fact that it was once considered a minor island, Menorca has a lot to offer to tourists and locals. Its white sand beaches have beautiful pine woods surrounding them, as well as parts that are beautifully rocky. The sight here is nothing short of romantic and splendid. This can be experienced in the beaches of Migjorn, and la Tramuntana coast.

The capital of Menorca is Mahon, which is a natural park that has a lake as well a charming village called Villacarlos. The village has British-influenced pieces of architecture, and the bays of Cala Llonga and Cala de Sant Esteve. The Albufera des Grau Natural Park has a lake, and different bird species numbering the hundreds.

Urbanized, quality white sand beaches of Cala d’es Rafalet, Punta Prima, and Cala Alcaufer can be found on the Southern side of Menorca in the small village of Sant Lluis. This 18th century village was founded by Frenchmen who used to reign here.

Another attraction in this island is Torret, which is a village made up of simple houses, white in color representing typical architectural styles of the island. It is fascinating to see people living in caves with only transistor radios as their contact with the world in Calas Covas. Alaior, an industrial town, produces shoes and has a historical center that is a must-visit during your tour. This area attracts tourists because of the interesting remains of history Talayot and Taula of Torraalba, as well as Torree d’en Gaumes.

These are just some of the amazing things you will find in this windy island of Spain. This country definitely has a solution for everybody and is worth visiting.

ARCOS DE LA FRONTERA

An Arab Town

Arcos de la Frontera gets its charm from its location: on a sheer cliff. The fact that the town is situated on top of a cliff makes it very picturesque. From any point of the town you can admire the spectacular views that lie at its feet. Being part of the province of Cadiz makes the town a real example of Arab influence.

Do you want to know some of the attractions of the town? Well, you will be delighted by its churches, its towers, and its viewpoints. The town has been inhabited since prehistory and the Arabs turned it into a defense point. Because it was of great strategic value, it became the capital of a kingdom belonging to the Taifa dinasty. The Arab influence is felt in this town watered by the River Guadalete, andits streets are very narrow and winding.

Probably the most beautiful part of the town is its historic center, which is situated between Cuesta de Belen and Puerta Matrona. Puerta Matrona is the gate through which tourists have the access to and from the Arab wall; the wall that used to surround the town as a defense strategy.

The Historic Centre

The historic center is one of the most popular attractions among tourists. In the center of it lies the Plaza del Cabildo. If you want to see some amazing buildings, you are in the right place. Here you will find the Town Hall and the Ducal Castle, which is a Muslim building built in the 12th century by the Arabs which was rebuilt in the 15th century. You can then go to the San Pedro Church, which was built following a Baroque style. On your sightseeing list must be the Basilica of Santa Maria de la Asuncion. This church combines two styles: the Gothis style, and the Plateresque one. Something very special about Arcos de la Frontera is the Palace of the Count of Aguila. The building is seen as a jewel, an excellent example of Gothic style and Mudejar elements.

Cuisine, Traditions, Accommodations

The cuisine of Arcos de la Frontera is influenced by its main activity: horticulture. The local dishes contain pumpkins, tomato and chickpeas. Arcos de la Frontera is famous for its festivals. Tourists can entertain themselves with a series of festivals throughout the year; festivals that bring to light the traditions and customs of the locals. Concerning accommodations, choose villas. They are coquette, relaxing, very private, and offer wonderful conditions. Enjoy your stay!

CHARMING ESTEPONA

ESTEPONA, which is located 30 km from Marbella on the West, is a refreshing Spanish resort compared to the other coastline resorts. Its accommodations are smaller but spacious enough for relaxation, with flower studded promenades, cobbled alleys, and two interesting plazas in the town.

What is Estepona Famous For?

Estepona boasts of the largest fishing fleet in the western side of Malaga, with a bustling fish market. The daily ritual at dawn is the auctioning of the catch from the morning fishing boats which port as early as 6 o’clock a.m. The whole hive of activity is over within an hour.

From the month of May, it’s the bullfighting season getting hyped up in the specially designed bullring which is reminiscent of the old sculpture by Henry Moore. The Fiesta y Feria kicks off the month of July for a week-long celebration which draws out the locals in full flamenco attire, transforming the whole atmosphere of Estepona.

At the outskirts of Estepona, a small road along the coast of about 8 km, leads to the hills before coming to CASARES, which is a typical Andaluz white town. Its unique location of being entrenched in a steep hillside right beneath an ancient castle has drawn many affluent and artistic personalities.

Another interesting feature here is the excellently preserved Roman baths. These are actually sulfur baths located 3 km away from Manilva village, which have been proclaimed to have healing properties. Be prepared to have a strong stench of sulfur on you for weeks should you be game to dive into the cavern for some healthful rejuvenation.

The beaches here are quite different from other places as the sand is grayish in color instead of yellow; nevertheless, this makes it a unique trademark of this area in Costa del Sol. But you might find yellow sand around the Atlantic coast just around the corner.

Tourists’ Amenities
There is a bus depot on España Avenue, located west of the tourist centre, at the back of the seafront. There are hostels and plazas with bars for a short break too.

Gastronomy

There is never a worry about filling your stomach as there are plenty of selection at the town, with splendid marisquerias and freidurías all along the main street of Calle Terraza. You can also find tasty churrería at the south side of Calle Mayor which sells off quickly before the morning is over. The sheltered morning market at Calle Castillo offers a variety of food for your convenience.

Estepona's nights come alive with music and songs at the rows of night spots behind the seafront which allow pedestrians only. Many locals enjoy the coolness of night life when it gets hot during the summer.

BREEZY EASY EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA

EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA is the popular choice for a family vacation for locals as well as for the affluent, who have built their own chalet or villa by the Playa Puntillo. The locals are called “gaditanos,” and the affluent are called “sevillanos.”

Although this part of the region is a bit away from the main towns and cities, it is still easily accessible by a local bus. For those who love a stroll, a 10 minute to 15 minute walk from town will lead you to El Puerto. It is a good choice to spend your afternoon as it has a pleasant atmosphere with friendly bars at the beach.

Highlights of El Puerto

The main attraction in town is the rows of white painted warehouses along the streets and riverbanks, called sherry bodegas. Before the railway tracks were extended to Cadiz, all sherry shipments were transported via Santa Maria port. And there were opportunities for free wine tasting and winery tours for visitors by the vineyards in the region, although these are seldom nowadays.

Tourist Center

There are local tours which the visitor can take to discover the historical and architectural beauties in this region. The interesting thing about these tourist centers is that they are located in a 17th century convent, which has been converted into a beautiful tourism center.

The tourism center of El Puerto is located at Calle Luna 22, close to the town plaza next to the ferry drop-offs. Within walking distance, you will find scrumptious seafood dishes in the restaurants with a good selection of shellfish in paper funnels, and a pint of beer to go with them. This proves to be the locals, as well as the visitors, favorite snack anytime. Locals and visitors alike prefer to enjoy the shady beach areas while watching life pass by.

Main Transportation

The sea transport around here is the El Vapor, or ferry, which is a modern mode of transportation than that of steamboats in the past. However, boarding the ferry from Cadiz is the better alternative to the bus, as it is faster and less costly. The ferry trip takes only 40 minutes when departing from the Estación Marítima bay at specific times; every 2 hours, starting from 10 o’clock a.m. every day. But different times apply during the summer.

For those who prefer a different mode of crossing, you can try the catamaran service that operates 7 trips every day from the same location. The price is slightly more expensive than the ferry.

SERENE and CHARMING El CABO DE GATA with SAN JOSE

El Cabo de Gata is a modest little town situated in Almeria, Spain. You will discover this quaint resort town as you head east on the coastline. Its beaches are filled with coarse sand as far as the eye can see.

There are a sufficient number of buses which ply daily from El Cabo de Gata to Almeria and back; with a stop at Retamar, which lies in between these 2 towns. Retamar is actually a retirement and holiday resort development.

Upon your arrival at El Cabo, you will be greeted by the surrounding blue, the Laguna de Rosa Lake, which is a protected conservation territory by the conservation society. It is the home of flamingos and various species of birds and waders all through the summer.

There are plenty of bars, shops, and cafés around the town, as well as a fish market.

Accommodations

Good places to stay may be sparse, which makes it even more challenging a task during the high season as there are only two hostels located upstairs of Playa bar and Mediterraneo bar on the beach. These are high budget accommodations which offer only the basic amenities.

However, with the growing tourist numbers, more accommodations are built such as the Calle Barrionnuevo hotel, and the Hostal Las Dunas which are a bit of a distance from the beach. These hotels charge the up-market prices for their en-suite rooms. Another more affordable and more adventurous accommodation alternative is the Cabo de Gata campsite which is also nearby. It even has a restaurant and a pool.

It can be quite windy at the beach during the afternoons, and it is quite a long walk back to Las Salinas or the Salt Pans eastward for a drink or snack at the café or bar.

San Jose

Further to El Cabo de Gata, you will reach San Jose if you travel by bus. San Jose has been established as a popular tourist resort with sandy beaches and small coves offering shallow water.

Again, accommodation may be challenging during the summer, though there is the least expensive hotel a distance away on the main road with a reasonably priced menu in its restaurant. There are the more expensive hotels closer to the village with acceptable en-suite rooms. However, you can opt to try out the campsite accommodations at Camping Tau which lies near the beach. It may be a better option as there are plenty of bars, cafes, and restaurants, as well as a supermarket that carries quite a bit of everything.

Los Escullos
Further up the coast, you will find Los Escullos which offers a nice beach with high budget accommodations; namely, Casa Emilio, which is a beachfront hotel-cum-restaurant.

You can travel further 2 km east of Casa Emilio to find a quaint fishing town that offers a lazy atmosphere and sandy beach, with one hostel that overlooks the harbor.
